Neil Young requested that the music streaming platform Spotify remove his music and they honored his request. Neil wanted his music removed from the platform due to the streaming of Joe Rogan’s podcast which he claims spreads misinformation about COVID-19 and vaccines.
He wrote, “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both. I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines. Potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them.” Spotify plans to add advisory notices on podcast episodes featuring COVID-19 information.
Reports show that Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify could cost him around $754,000 per year. In addition, Spotify’s value has dropped $2 billion since this situation began. After Neil pulled his music from Spotify, other artists chose to do the same thing including Joni Mitchell, India. Arie, and Nils Lofgren.
Joni said, “I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”
What’s your take on this issue? Do you think Neil and the other artists made the right choice by pulling their music from Spotify or do you miss them on the music streaming platform?
