99-Year-Old WWII Veteran Raises More Than $18M With Birthday Walk

Captain Tom Moore is a 99-year-old World War II veteran. He recently embarked on a journey to raise money “for our brave nurses and doctors.” He vowed to do 100 laps around his backyard for his 100th birthday and has stolen the hearts of so many for his acts. Moore’s target was to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together. However, he achieved that in less than a day! As of April 16th, 2020, he has raised £14,722,361.76, which equates to $18,304,459.60 and is still rising.

Moore is working through the 100 laps 10 laps at a time around the 25-meter loop of his garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire. He has been updating people through social media (someone runs his account for him), on how the progress is moving along.

“WOW – 4 million pound for our NHS! We cannot wait to tell the news to Tom in the morning, he will not believe his ears! Thanks each and every one of you – we are in awe of you, but especially our frontline staff who need this now more than ever. #TomorrowWillBeAGoodDay,” says the person behind the account.

With all this being said, Moore is super ahead of schedule. He plans to complete the full 2.5 kilometers by April 16th instead of his initial plan of April 30th, which is his 100th birthday.

How you can help him celebrate his birthday

Moore is originally from Keighly in West Yorkshire. He trained as a civil engineer before he enlisted in the Army for World War II. Moore would later rise to the rank of Captain and serve in India and Burma (now Myanmar).

Moore’s 100th birthday party had to be canceled due to the coronavirus and social distancing measures. However, there is one way you can make his 100th birthday memorable. BBC Breakfast shared his address so that people all over the world can send him birthday cards!

What an incredible man doing something for such a great cause. All of us at DYR wish him a very happy 100th birthday and thank him for his service, for both WWII and now! If you wish to donate to his cause, click here.
