Ladies and gentlemen, we now have our first hurricane of the season and it is massive. Our very first hurricane is currently Category 4 Hurricane Barbara. Barbara started as a measly tropical depression, then formed from a tropical storm to full-blown Category 4 in a matter of 24 hours. She is forecast to become a Category 5 storm, with winds of at least 157 mph.

Thankfully, Barbara is just hanging out in the open waters right now. But it is an absolute monster. It’s predicted that Hawaii might get the tail end of the storm with some wind and rain. Plan an evacuation route ahead of time

With a hurricane like this, there is no telling what storms await us this summer! Plan your evacuation route ahead of time in the event you need to get up and leave. It’s highly likely you’ll receive instructions from the local government on where to go/what to do, but it’s always wise to have a plan of action before disaster strikes. It’s also smart to take into account your pets, children, and nearby shelters.

Be sure to have non-perishable items on hand

This includes food, batteries, matches, prescription drugs, a supply of drinking water, a portable weather radio, and a flashlight. Having at least a three-day supply of each item will ensure your safety and well-being if you find yourself without power or in an evacuation. (Remember to always replenish your stash!)

Protect your home

It is very important to take the necessary steps to protect your home. This includes cutting weak branches or trees, installing storm shutters to protect windows, making your exterior doors hurricane-proof, sealing outside wall openings, and more. Whether you’re evacuating or not, following these steps will ensure the safety of you and your home.

These steps are incredibly important to follow to ensure your safety during the hurricane season. There’s no telling what this one will bring, but we highly recommend watching your weather closely during this time of year.
