Sally Field is looking back on one of the most difficult periods of her journey in Hollywood and the surprising person who helped change everything. The actress revealed that after starring in The Flying Nun, many people in the industry struggled to see her as a serious dramatic performer. Despite her popularity on television, casting directors often overlooked her for major opportunities. Sally Field's career reached a turning point only after years of intense training and encouragement from fellow actor Jack Nicholson, who recognized her talent long before many others did. What is Sally Field doing now? Updated October 16, 2026: She is still winning awards. On September 14, 2026, Sally Field won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix's Remarkably Bright Creatures. She was 79, which makes her the oldest winner ever in that category. She passed the late Jessica Tandy, the Associated Press reported. She turns 80 on November 6. It is her fourth Emmy. The first came for Sybil in 1977, and she won again for a guest role on ER in 2001 and for Brothers & Sisters in 2007. Nearly 50 years separate her first win from her latest. In the film she plays Tova Sullivan, a widow who works nights cleaning an aquarium and forms an unlikely friendship with a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus. It is based on Shelby Van Pelt's bestselling novel. What did she say when she won? She looked truly surprised. "Wow, wow. This is not supposed to happen," she said on stage, according to the AP. "I love this project from page one." She also stood up for her profession. "We're the arts, we matter, our voices matter, our diversity, our unique storytelling matters," she said, as reported by Entertainment Now. She also thanked Canada, where the movie was filmed: "Blessed Canada, our neighbors, our friends." Why this role meant so much to her family Field has three sons, Peter, Eli and Sam, and all of them work in the film business. Her oldest, Peter Craig, is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick, and he produced Remarkably Bright Creatures. "My dream in life was always to work with my three sons who are all in the business," she told PEOPLE. "Peter helped guide this whole project along." One moment from the shoot has stayed with her. They were filming a scene on a pier in pouring rain, and between takes Peter came running toward her with blankets to take her to a warm car. "I thought to myself, 'This is one of the moments of my life,'" she said. Then she joked about what comes next. "So one down, two to go." Sally Field Struggled To Escape Her Early TV Image Sally Field/Everett Collection According to PEOPLE, Field said Hollywood executives believed they already knew exactly what kind of actress she was after her sitcom success. She explained that she often could not even secure auditions because producers dismissed her before meeting her. Instead of giving up, the actress pushed herself to improve. She joined the famous Actors Studio in Los Angeles, where she trained under acting coach Lee Strasberg alongside respected performers who took their craft seriously. Rather than blaming Hollywood entirely, she told herself she needed to become so skilled that the industry could no longer ignore her talent. She spent years training constantly while hoping the hard work would eventually open doors. Jack Nicholson Helped Open New Doors In Hollywood 13 December 2010 - Westwood, California - Jack Nicholson. According to the actress, Nicholson noticed her dedication and later recommended her to casting director Dianne Crittenden and filmmaker Bob Rafelson as an undiscovered talent. That recommendation eventually led to a meeting for the film Stay Hungry, which became one of the first major steps toward a more respected acting career. The movie featured Jeff Bridges and Arnold Schwarzenegger and marked what Field described as the beginning of real change in Hollywood.
