Somewhere in the clearance section of Amoeba Music in San Francisco, a shopper may soon pull out a $2.99 copy of The Partridge Family's 1971 album Up to Date and find a little something extra on it. Danny Bonaduce signed it himself, then slipped it back into the bin behind a Robert Plant record. According to Parade, the former child star, who was born on August 13, 1959, and is now 67, has made a habit of sneaking into record stores and autographing the old albums he finds there. The habit is older than most fans realize, and it means more after the health battle of his last few years. Where Is Danny Bonaduce Leaving Signed Albums? PARTRIDGE FAMILY, Danny Bonaduce, 1970-1974 / Everett Collection Bonaduce films each stop for TikTok, and at Amoeba he could not resist a joke about where his old records had ended up. "We're in the clearance section, which is only slightly insulting," he said in the video. This time, he admitted, the staff spotted him. "By the way, we got caught this time so we had to talk to management," he added. "They were very cool." Parade reports two other recent drops. In August, at an Eco Thrift store in San Bernardino, California, he signed the front of a 1971 copy of the Partridge Family's Sound Magazine album and tucked it behind a Jimmy Swaggart record. The April stop was more tender. At a vintage shop in Seattle, he signed a 1972 copy of The Partridge Family Notebook and added a birthday message to his late TV brother, David Cassidy, who was born on April 12, 1950, before tucking it behind a Peter Frampton album in a $3 bin. He hunts for his own records outside of stores, too. In June, Parade reported, he posted photos from a flea market in Rancho Cucamonga, California, holding two copies of Up to Date. "Who knew I was so popular in Rancho Cucamonga?" he wrote. He tags his store visits #autographbandit and asks fans to let him know when they find a signed copy, and that nickname goes back further than you might think. How Long Has The 'Autograph Bandit' Been At It? THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY, back, from left: Susan Dey, David Cassidy, Dave Madden; middle: Danny Bonaduce; bottom: Shirley Jones, Brian Forster, Suzanne Crough/Everett Parade traces the habit back at least five years, to a signed copy of The Partridge Family Album he posted from Amoeba in 2021, but the roots run deeper still. In August 2018, the music site Noise11 reported that Bonaduce had spent months hunting down the "P" section in record stores and signing every Partridge Family album he found with a Sharpie. Back then he shared the outings on Twitter under the same hashtag, hitting stores in Los Angeles, Seattle, Phoenix, Honolulu and Vancouver and even raiding toy stores that sold old Partridge Family merchandise. On the Vancouver trip, his son Dante served as his lookout. He had a ready answer for anyone who objected. "Some people might call this vandalism. I call it 'adding value.' You're welcome," he said, according to Noise11. And there is a funny twist in all of this, because the man signing these albums never actually played on them. Did Danny Bonaduce Really Play On Those Records? DANNY!, Danny Bonaduce, 1995. ph: Dan Rest/©Buena Vista Television/courtesy Everett Collection The Partridge Family premiered on ABC on September 25, 1970, with 11-year-old Bonaduce as Danny, the wisecracking middle son who handled bass guitar in the family band. Within two months the group had a smash. If you had a transistor radio that fall, you heard "I Think I Love You," which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November and December 1970 and sold more than five million copies. The voices on those records, though, belonged only to David Cassidy and Shirley Jones, while session musicians, including members of the famed Wrecking Crew, played the instruments. Up to Date, the album Bonaduce signed at Amoeba, went gold in 1971 and included the hits "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted" and "I'll Meet You Halfway." Bonaduce has never pretended otherwise. "Nobody would have thought I was playing," he said in a 2026 interview with Pop Culture Retro, as reported by Parade. He remembered Cassidy correcting his technique while they filmed the pilot. "You don't strum a bass guitar, you pluck it. Do you think you can pluck it, kid?" Cassidy told him. Johnny Cash happened to be on hand that day, and he assured the young actor he was doing "fine." Those were happy days on set. The decades that followed were much harder, and his health became the toughest test of all. Why Do These Little Surprises Mean So Much Now? According to ET, surgeons placed a shunt to drain the fluid during a two-hour operation on June 5, 2023. That December he retired from Seattle's KZOK-FM, where he had hosted mornings since 2011, and his final broadcast aired on December 15, 2023. Since then he has turned his experience into advocacy. In July 2026, he gave the inspirational keynote at HA CONNECT, the Hydrocephalus Association's national conference in Indianapolis, speaking about his recovery from normal pressure hydrocephalus. We looked at how Danny Bonaduce looks today when he turned 67 in August. Knowing his history gives those autographs an extra meaning. Bonaduce has said that during his broke years after the show, he lived in his car and spent his days outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, signing autographs for fans who never knew he slept in that car at night. Back then, the fans came looking for him. Today, after brain surgery and retirement, he goes looking for them, one bargain bin at a time.
