Leave It to Beaver premiered on October 4, 1957, introducing television audiences to a mischievous little boy named Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver and the suburban family that would become one of America's most beloved. Sixty-nine years later, Jerry Mathers, now 78, is the last surviving actor among the four principal members of the Cleaver family. The sitcom that made him famous ran for six seasons and 234 episodes, turning everyday childhood mishaps into unforgettable television. For generations of viewers, Ward, June, Wally, and Beaver represented a familiar world of family dinners, neighborhood adventures, and lessons learned the hard way. But the show's journey to television immortality wasn't entirely smooth. CBS dropped Leave It to Beaver after its first season, only for ABC to pick it up and keep the Cleaver family on the air for another five years. By the time the series ended in 1963, Mathers had grown from a little boy into a teenager, and audiences had watched Wally prepare for college. The reruns would ultimately keep the show alive for generations, while the cast members went on to very different lives. Today, with Hugh Beaumont, Barbara Billingsley, and Tony Dow all gone, Mathers remains the familiar face of the family that welcomed America into its living room nearly seven decades ago. 'Leave It To Beaver' Outlived Every Rumor LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, Jerry Mathers, 1957-63 / Everett Collection Mathers almost missed his chance to become a television star because he had somewhere more important to be. During his final audition for Leave It to Beaver, the young actor was growing impatient because he was supposed to attend his very first Cub Scout meeting. When producers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher asked what was bothering him, he admitted that he would rather leave than continue auditioning. Instead of costing him the job, his honesty helped him win it. Mathers later explained that the producers wanted a genuine little boy rather than a child desperate for Hollywood fame, and his eagerness to get back to ordinary childhood activities made him the perfect Beaver. Mathers has spent decades cheerfully debunking the strangest rumor of all, the persistent myth that the Beaver died in Vietnam. It was never true, and he has had a long and happy life proving it. After leaving acting to attend school, serve in the military reserves, and pursue careers in banking and real estate, he reunited with Tony Dow for the 1983 television movie Still the Beaver. Its success led to the revival series The New Leave It to Beaver, which ran during the 1980s and showed the Cleaver brothers navigating adulthood and parenthood. Barbara Billingsley also returned as June, giving longtime fans the chance to see their favorite television family together again. Mathers and Dow continued appearing at fan conventions and nostalgia events together for decades, maintaining a friendship that outlasted their childhood fame. Nearly seven decades after Leave It to Beaver first aired, its familiar characters remain part of television history. From the childhood antics of Beaver and Wally to the gentle guidance of Ward and June, the Cleavers gave audiences a picture of family life that continues to resonate. Mathers may be the last surviving member of television's original Cleaver household, but through 234 episodes and countless reruns, the family remains together every time someone turns on the television.
