Mayberry was never a real town, but The Andy Griffith Show left no doubt about what state it called home. Sheriff Andy Taylor's little community sat in North Carolina, within driving distance of Raleigh and a short hop from a bigger town called Mount Pilot. Ask most fans, or the town itself, and they will tell you the real model was Mount Airy, the Surry County town where Andy Griffith grew up. Here is the twist: Griffith spent years disputing that answer. In 1998 he told an interviewer he was tired of arguing about it. Four years later, he stood in front of a crowd in Mount Airy and said something that changed the tone completely. When The Andy Griffith Show premiered on CBS on October 3, 1960, it began an eight-season run that lasted until 1968, with Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor of a fictional North Carolina town. And for just as long, the real-life candidate for that town has been Mount Airy, North Carolina, the place Griffith called home. The Short Answer: Where Was Mayberry Located? Why life after Mayberry was difficult for Andy Griffith / Everett Collection On screen, Mayberry was a small town in North Carolina, and the scripts were coy about the details. They never gave it a county or a map pin, yet they kept dropping real places all around it. Raleigh, which the characters often called "Capital City," was the big city on the horizon, and Siler City, Asheville, Greensboro and Winston-Salem all came up as well. Off screen, the closest real match is Mount Airy, a town of about 10,000 people near the Virginia line where Griffith was born and raised. Its Mayberry ties run deep enough, according to Fox News, that it now hosts the Andy Griffith Museum. The town's visitor center goes further still, calling Mount Airy "the real-life Mayberry and inspiration for The Andy Griffith Show," as CBS News noted on a visit there. What the Show Actually Says About Mayberry's Location Don Knotts as Barney Fife on 'The Andy Griffith Show' / Everett Collection The strongest clue hides in plain sight. Mount Pilot was the larger neighboring town where Mayberry folks went shopping and where Barney sometimes found trouble, and while there is no Mount Pilot in North Carolina, there is a Pilot Mountain. It stands in Surry County, the same county as Mount Airy. The second clue is a lunch counter. In the first-season episode "Andy the Matchmaker," which aired November 14, 1960, Andy suggests to Barney that after a movie they could go down to the Snappy Lunch for something to eat. According to Carolina Country and Blue Ridge Country, the Snappy Lunch is a real diner on Main Street in Mount Airy, open since 1923, and Griffith ate there as a teenager. The characters talked about going, though viewers never saw them walk in. The town's name, on the other hand, came from the scripts rather than a map. In the show, Mayberry was named for a fictional founder, John Mayberry, and Griffith told Larry King in 2003 that the name itself came from Artie Stander, a writer from the show's early days, not from any real place. What Andy Griffith and Sheldon Leonard Said THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, from left: Don Knotts, Jim Nabors, Andy Griffith, 1964, (1960-1968). ph: Richard R. Hewett / TV Guide / Courtesy Everett Collection Griffith gave his fullest account in a May 1998 interview for the Archive of American Television, recorded in Manteo, North Carolina. At the start, he said, producer Sheldon Leonard did not want the show tied to his home state at all. "At first Sheldon didn't want it to be in North Carolina, he just wanted it to be somewhere in the South," Griffith said in the Television Academy interview. Griffith disliked the made-up town names that came with that plan, so he quietly started working real ones into his dialogue. "We did have Mount Pilot, which there's a place called Pilot Mountain up near Mount Airy," he explained. "But I gradually started slipping in real towns in North Carolina like Asheville, and Raleigh and Siler City." On the Mount Airy question itself, though, he sounded worn out. MeTV quoted the same interview: "They think that I based the show on Mount Airy. I've argued about this too long. I don't care. Let them think what they want to think." He even laughed off a local barber who claimed to have cut his hair as a boy, saying the man would have to be 115 years old. What Griffith seemed to care about was credit. In his telling, Mayberry was built by the producers and writers in Hollywood, and the North Carolina flavor came from him, one line at a time. That left the door open for a softer answer later on. Where Was 'The Andy Griffith Show' Really Filmed? Interior scenes were filmed at Desilu Studios in Culver City, California, and Fox News reported that the show used the same soundstage that had been used for Gone with the Wind. Mayberry's main street lived on Forty Acres, the Desilu backlot in Culver City, where the courthouse, Floyd's barbershop and the storefronts were all building fronts. Even so, Griffith said working there gave him "the feeling of being in a small town," according to MeTV. The famous fishing hole was in Los Angeles, too. The walk Andy and Opie take with their poles in the opening credits, the one you can probably whistle along to right now, was filmed at the lake in Franklin Canyon, north of Beverly Hills. The most Southern-looking show on 1960s television was made almost entirely within a few miles of Hollywood. How Mount Airy Became Mayberry Anyway THE ANDY GRIFFITH, DON KNOTTS, JIM NABORS SHOW, Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, 1965. photo: Bruce McBroom/TV Guide/courtesy Everett Collection Mount Airy did not wait for Griffith's blessing. In 1990, the Surry Arts Council launched Mayberry Days to mark the show's 30th anniversary, an idea that grew out of the estate auction of Frances Bavier, who played Aunt Bee and retired to North Carolina, according to the council's festival history. Held in late September to line up with the show's October 1960 premiere, the festival started as a single day and now runs close to a week. Fox News reported that nearly 50,000 visitors came for the show's 50th anniversary in 2010. Fans who visit today can still order a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch and stroll the downtown that inspired so much talk. The state has embraced the connection as well. In 2025, North Carolina lawmakers filed a bill to make the series the official TV show of North Carolina, as DYR reported at the time. Griffith's own answer finally came on October 16, 2002, when a stretch of U.S. 52 near Mount Airy was named the Andy Griffith Parkway. With his wife, Cindi, watching, he stepped to the podium and told the hometown crowd that people had started saying Mayberry was based on Mount Airy. Then he paused, and after all those years of arguing, he gave them the answer they had been waiting for. "It sure sounds like it, doesn't it?" he said, as Our State magazine recounted. Mayberry lives on in the people who made it, and you can see who is still with us in the Andy Griffith Show cast members still alive today.
