Sixty years after he last pulled on Eddie Munster's velvet suit and sharp widow's peak, Butch Patrick is still turning up at drive-ins and car shows across the country, and fans who line up for an autograph keep asking what happened to the little werewolf. Born Patrick Alan Lilley on August 2, 1953, in Inglewood, California, he is 73 now. The answer to the question about Butch Patrick today is warmer than the road he took to get there, and it starts with a role that had already been filmed by another boy. This month Hello! called his life today "drastically different" from his years on Mockingbird Lane. That is true, but the change didn't happen all at once. It took a casino, a rock band, a hard four decades, and a doctor's appointment he almost skipped. How Did Butch Patrick Win a Role Another Boy Had Already Played? 'The Munsters' Child Star Butch Patrick, 73, Lives a Very Different Life 60 Years After Playing Eddie / Everett Collection When CBS shot the pilot for The Munsters in 1964, Eddie was played by a boy named Happy Derman. Patrick described Derman's take to Zoomer in 2017 as "very edgy. He did a lot of growling, almost rabid." The producers wanted a softer Eddie, and Patrick was staying in Illinois when his agent sent clips to Hollywood. "There wasn't an actual audition," he told Zoomer. "I did a quick screen test and was hired on the spot." He was hardly a beginner. A talent agent had spotted him at seven, and he made his feature debut in The Two Little Bears in 1961 before guest spots on Mister Ed, The Real McCoys and My Favorite Martian, where he played a boy named Stevie in 1963. Even so, The Munsters felt different to him. "At the time it was my third TV series, but the content on the show was so unusual and unlike anything I'd done before," he said. The set itself was no fairy tale. "Our sound stage was the darkest, dingiest, dirtiest place you could imagine," he told Fox News in 2016, and he has said he treasured any chance to work outside in the sun. He stayed for all 70 episodes, surrounded by grown-ups like Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis, whose friendship began long before Herman and Grandpa. "I was Eddie Munster every day for two years," he told Fox News in 2014. "The last thing I wanted to be was Eddie Munster when I went home." So what does a boy do after he has been a werewolf on national television? What Came After Mockingbird Lane? 'The Munsters' Child Star Butch Patrick, 73, Lives a Very Different Life 60 Years After Playing Eddie / Everett Collection He kept working for a while. After the 1966 film Munster, Go Home!, he landed his own Saturday morning show, starring as Mark in Sid and Marty Krofft's Lidsville in 1971. Mark was a teenager who tumbles into a magician's top hat and lands in a world of living hats, with Charles Nelson Reilly as the villain Horatio J. HooDoo. By 1975 he had stepped away from acting to work for his father. "Basically, my dad owned a gambling casino and I learned the gaming industry," he told the Seattle Times in 2004, as Hello! recounted. He also picked up the bass guitar, and in 1983 he released "Whatever Happened to Eddie?" under the name Eddie and the Monsters, with new lyrics set to the Munsters theme. "We were the first unsigned act on MTV, back in the days when it was very difficult," he told HPR in 2019, a claim that comes from the band itself. He told Zoomer the band "was more of a therapy outlet for me." The phrase was more honest than it sounded at the time. Why Did He Say He Was "Just Surviving"? Butch Patrick/Everett Behind the novelty single was a long struggle with drugs and alcohol. "I had been partying for 41 years," Patrick told Zoomer. "At that point I wasn't really living, I was just surviving." He put it almost the same way on Oprah Winfrey's OWN in 2016: "I was functioning, but I wasn't thriving." In 2010, at 57, he checked into a detox program in Williamstown, New Jersey, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer he had been "drinking way more than I should have been." Around the same time he told WFMZ, "I never thought I would make it past 30 and I just turned 57." Treatment saved him in a way he didn't expect. "The irony is that, four months into sobriety, I found out I had cancer," he told Zoomer. The diagnosis was prostate cancer, and it was caught early enough for surgery. "Had I not done it and had I not been getting sober, I would have ignored it," he told OWN. He has been cancer-free since. Why Is Eddie Munster Still Driving the Munster Koach? Rob Zombie and Butch Patrick ride the Munsters Koach Sober and healthy, Patrick made peace with the boy he had once tried to leave at the studio gate. He owns tribute versions of both famous cars, the Munster Koach and the coffin-shaped Dragula, and he still hauls them to drag strips and drive-ins. In June 2025 he fired up the 480-horsepower Dragula for fans at the Silver Drive-In, The Tribune-Democrat reported. "I also loved riding around in the Munster Koach a lot," he told Zoomer of his years on the show. When Rob Zombie made his own The Munsters for Netflix in 2022, he called Patrick a good friend and brought him back to Mockingbird Lane as the voice of the Tin Can Man, the robot Grandpa built for Eddie's science fair. "Yes, that is correct," Patrick confirmed to The Pitch that September. "I did it in Hollywood." DYR covered his return to the franchise at the time, and our look at the surviving Munsters cast shows how few of his TV family remain. Who Is Butch Patrick Today, at 73? Butch Patrick / Wikimedia Commons The man who once called a rock band his therapy now spends much of his time helping other people find a way out. "I've helped a lot of people whenever I can with speaking engagements, or meetings for AA or Salvation Army," he told HPR. He takes small parts in independent horror films for the same reason. "I enjoy helping people achieve their dreams," he told The Pitch, calling it "a way to give back to the industry." Hello! reports that he has also taught a "Hollywood 101" class. He also went looking for his roots. In the 2010s, he bought the 1875 Victorian home in Macon, Missouri, that his grandmother had owned, after finding it in foreclosure. "I recently bought the house my grandmother once owned in Missouri," he told Zoomer, adding that it was "actually a very active haunted house." On September 11, 2016, he married his longtime partner Leila Murray in Macon, at The Macon Roundhouse. The little werewolf who once told himself he would never see 30 now makes time, whenever he can, to show strangers how to get through the fight he won.
