Al Jardine has spent most of his life closely associated with California, but a recent concert brought him back to the state where his story actually began. The Beach Boys cofounder returned to Ohio for an intimate performance with the Pet Sounds Band and surprised fans with a song he had not performed in decades. According to Rolling Stone, the moment gave longtime listeners something especially rare: Al Jardine singing “Back Home,” an overlooked Beach Boys track with a fitting connection to Ohio. Jardine was born in Lima, Ohio, before moving to California as a child, making the song’s return feel both nostalgic and personal. Al Jardine Singing “Back Home” Again After Decades Al Jardine/Instagram During the Aug. 15 show at the Robins Theatre in Warren, Ohio, Jardine opened the encore by telling the audience that the band was about to do something new for them. He explained that he had not performed the song in roughly 50 years and had only rehearsed it once earlier that day. Beach Boys—Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, Mike Love, Carl Wilson/Everett Collection Dedicated Beach Boys fans quickly realized he meant “Back Home,” a song that opens with references to returning to Ohio and revisiting familiar places. Although Jardine remembered performing it around 1973, the track’s history stretches across several different recording sessions. Brian Wilson and Bob Norberg first wrote it in 1963, and the Beach Boys experimented with several versions before finally releasing one on the 1976 album “15 Big Ones.” The band performed “Back Home” regularly for a short period in the late 1970s, but it eventually disappeared from their live repertoire. Jardine’s Ohio performance marked a rare return for a song that had remained largely untouched onstage for decades. Jardine Has Been Digging Deep Into Beach Boys History Everett Collection “Back Home” is not the only overlooked Beach Boys song Jardine has revisited recently. Over the past year, he has brought several deeper cuts back into his concerts, including material from 1977’s “The Beach Boys Love You” and songs from the 1978 album “M.I.U. Album.” That approach gives fans something different from a standard greatest-hits show. Rather than relying only on classics such as “California Girls” or “Help Me, Rhonda,” Jardine has been exploring parts of the group’s catalog that even longtime listeners rarely hear performed live. The Beach Boys, front from left: Mike Love, Carl Wilson; rear from left: Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, Dennis Wilson, 1970s/Everett Collection The Al Jardine singing moment in Ohio carried even more meaning because of his personal connection to the state. Though California became central to both his identity and the Beach Boys’ image, Ohio represents an earlier chapter of his life. Returning there with a song literally called “Back Home” created the kind of full-circle moment that cannot easily be recreated elsewhere. For Beach Boys devotees, it also offered proof that the group’s deeper catalog still has life left in it. More than half a century after the song first took shape, Jardine found a new reason to sing it again—this time in the place where his own story began.
