Long before reality television blurred the line between private life and entertainment, the Nelson family invited America into their home every week. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet presented Ozzie, Harriet, and their sons as an ideal American family, and viewers essentially watched David and Ricky Nelson grow from children into young men. According to Amomama, for Ricky, television fame soon opened the door to something even bigger. His charm, good looks, and musical talent transformed him from a sitcom son into one of the era’s biggest teen idols. Yet behind the wholesome family image and chart success, his personal life became far more complicated, and his story ultimately ended in tragedy. Ricky Nelson Went From Sitcom Kid to Teenage Heartthrob Wikipedia The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet began on radio in 1944, with actors initially portraying the young Nelson boys. David and Ricky joined the radio program themselves in 1949, and the family moved to television when the series premiered on ABC in 1952. Over its 14-year television run, audiences watched both brothers grow up, with Ricky often attracting attention through the show’s humorous storylines. Music soon made him a star beyond the sitcom. His early releases “I’m Walkin’” and “A Teenager’s Romance” became major hits, reaching No. 4 and No. 2, respectively, on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart. Between 1957 and 1973, he placed 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and its predecessor charts, establishing a recording career that proved he was much more than a television personality. Fame Couldn’t Protect the Family From Difficult Times Wikimedia Commons Ricky married Kristin Harmon in 1963, and they had four children, including Tracy, Gunnar, and Matthew Nelson. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1982. Three years later, Ricky died at 45 when his private plane crash-landed in Texas during a Southern tour. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously in 1987. David Nelson Found His Place Behind the Camera Ricky Nelson had as complicated a family life as countless others / Everett Collection While Ricky became the family’s breakout music star, older brother David eventually gravitated toward work behind the camera. He began directing episodes of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in the early 1960s, taking over the reins from his father for about a dozen episodes, and later spent decades directing commercials, television projects, and films. David also continued acting occasionally, appearing in movies including Peyton Place and The Big Circus, with his final film role coming in 1990’s Cry-Baby. Despite the enormous attention surrounding his younger brother, David later said there was no real rivalry between them and that he rooted for Ricky as his music career took off. Los Angeles Times reported. Ricky’s 1985 death brought David a difficult new responsibility. As executor of his brother’s estate, he spent years sorting through financial and legal complications while looking out for Ricky’s children. Ricky’s son Matthew later recalled that David “stepped up to the plate” for his brother and his family during the aftermath. David, whose first marriage to actress June Blair ended in divorce in 1975, eventually became the last surviving member of the television Nelson family. He died at his Los Angeles home in 2011 at age 74 from complications of colon cancer. David later acknowledged that maintaining that spotless television image could become an enormous burden because life away from the cameras did not always resemble what audiences saw each week. Both brothers ultimately followed very different paths after growing up in front of millions of viewers. Ricky became a teenage idol whose life was cut short at 45, while David built a quieter career behind the camera and lived to see himself become the last surviving member of the famous television family. Their lives revealed a much more complicated story behind the wholesome Nelson household audiences welcomed into their homes each week.
