Whitney Houston would have turned 63 on August 9, 2026. Fourteen years after her death, fans continue to celebrate the extraordinary voice that made her one of the most successful singers of her generation. According to The Express, however, her remarkable career also came with deeply difficult personal struggles. Houston died unexpectedly on February 11, 2012, at just 48 years old. Details released after her death revealed how serious some of those struggles had become during the final period of her life. What was Whitney Houston's official cause of death? Updated October 15, 2026: The Los Angeles County Coroner ruled that Whitney Houston accidentally drowned in the bathtub of her room at the Beverly Hilton. Heart disease and cocaine use were listed as contributing factors. The coroner announced the findings on March 22, 2012, about six weeks after she died, the Associated Press reported. Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey explained how the pieces fit together. "Chances are, had she not had the pre-existing heart disease and cocaine use, she may not have drowned," he said, according to ABC7. Harvey also said the tests showed she was a chronic cocaine user. Her arteries had serious blockages from atherosclerotic heart disease. Investigators also found marijuana, Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril and Benadryl in her system, but the report said those did not contribute to her death. Police found no signs of trauma or foul play. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, Whitney Houston, December 14, 1996 episode. Her personal assistant last saw her alive between 2:45 and 3 p.m. When the assistant came back to the room, she found Whitney face down in the tub, according to the coroner's final report as covered by CBS Los Angeles. She was pulled from the water at 3:43 p.m. and declared dead at 3:55 p.m. She was 48. Her family responded with quiet dignity. "We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure," said Patricia Houston, her sister-in-law and manager. She was 21. She spent months in a medically induced coma and died on July 26, 2015, at age 22. She was buried in New Jersey next to her mother. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's findings came out on March 4, 2016, which would have been her 23rd birthday. The report said having her face underwater while on a mix of drugs led to her death. The medical examiner said "death was clearly not due to natural causes" but could not say whether it was an accident, so the manner of death was listed as undetermined, ET reported. Her father, Bobby Brown, kept it simple: "Krissy will always live in my heart and soul."
