Sylvester Stallone Turned Down Elvis Presley’s Personal Invitation And Regretted It For Decades

by Ruth A

Published October 6, 2026

Sylvester Stallone has played some of Hollywood’s toughest characters, but even Rocky Balboa himself once found the idea of meeting a music legend too intimidating. Looking back decades later, Stallone admitted that one of his biggest regrets was passing up the chance to spend time with Elvis Presley.

According to Parade, during a conversation on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Stallone recalled that Presley personally invited him to Tennessee in 1976, shortly after Rocky became a sensation. The Sylvester Stallone and Elvis Presley story sounds almost unbelievable now: the king reportedly wanted Stallone to come to his home and then watch Rocky with him privately at a local theater.

Stallone said he simply felt too shy to go through with the meeting. Despite his rising fame, the actor wondered what he could possibly say to Presley and feared he might become completely tongue-tied in the singer’s presence. Looking back, he now sees the missed opportunity very differently.

“There are a few things I truly regret,” Stallone told Shetty, adding that Elvis was among the famous figures he wished he had met. His advice today is simple: when a rare opportunity arrives, take it, even if the timing is inconvenient. The regret became even more poignant because Presley died the following year, on Aug. 16, 1977.

Although the two stars never met, Rocky still found its way to Presley. Stallone reportedly sent him a personal copy of the film after declining the invitation. Presley regularly rented Memphis’ Memphian Theater for private late-night screenings, making Stallone’s recollection of a one-on-one viewing especially fitting. There was also another unexpected connection between Elvis and the film. Singer-songwriter Carol Connors, who once dated Presley, later co-wrote Rocky’s famous theme song, “Gonna Fly Now,” alongside Bill Conti and Ayn Robbins. The song became inseparable from the movie’s underdog story and training sequences.

By then, Rocky had transformed Stallone’s life, earning 10 Oscar nominations and winning Best Picture. Yet the Sylvester Stallone and Elvis Presley story reveals a vulnerable side of his rise to fame. Even as Stallone became a household name, he still felt too overwhelmed to meet one of his idols. Decades later, the missed invitation remains one of his regrets.
