70 Years Ago, 60 Million Americans Watched Elvis Presley Change Television Forever On ‘The Ed Sullivan’ Show

Published September 9, 2026

Seventy years ago, on Sept. 9, 1956, Elvis Presley stepped onto The Ed Sullivan Show and into television history. He was only 21, but his records were already climbing the charts, his performances were stirring controversy, and his stage presence had turned him into one of the most talked-about young performers in America.

Elvis making any kind of The Ed Sullivan Show debut gave millions of viewers their first real look at the singer who was already changing popular music. An estimated 60 million people watched that night, roughly 82 percent of the television audience at the time, making it one of the biggest broadcasts in television history.

Elvis Making His ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ Debut Almost Didn’t Happen the Way Fans Remember

Ed Sullivan had not initially been eager to feature Presley. His Sunday-night program attracted families across generations, while Elvis had already drawn criticism over his energetic performances and hip movements. Everything changed after Elvis appeared opposite Sullivan on The Steve Allen Show in July 1956 and helped beat Sullivan in the ratings. Soon afterward, Sullivan and Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, reached an agreement for three appearances worth a reported $50,000. But when the first show arrived, Sullivan could not host because he was recovering from injuries suffered in a car accident. British actor Charles Laughton stepped in as guest host.

Elvis was not in New York either. He was in Hollywood filming his first movie, then called The Reno Brothers, so the program switched live across the country to CBS Television City in Los Angeles. Wearing a plaid jacket and backed by Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, and The Jordanaires, Elvis opened with “Don’t Be Cruel.” He also introduced millions of viewers to “Love Me Tender,” which had not yet reached record stores. The song soon became a No. 1 hit, and 20th Century-Fox eventually renamed Elvis’ movie after it.

One Night Helped Turn Elvis Into a National Phenomenon

Later in the broadcast, Elvis performed “Ready Teddy” and “Hound Dog,” the latter already tied to the growing controversy surrounding his stage performances. The screams inside the studio showed how strongly young fans responded, but the scale of the television audience told an even bigger story. Around 60 million people watched, at a time when the U.S. population stood at roughly 168 million. That meant about one in every three Americans saw Elvis perform that night. More importantly, The Ed Sullivan Show placed him before teenagers, parents, and grandparents at the same time.

That reach helped turn Elvis from a rising young singer into a shared national experience. He returned to Sullivan’s show twice more, in October 1956 and January 1957, but his first appearance remains the defining moment. Looking back at the Elvis Ed Sullivan performance 70 years later also means seeing Elvis before the full legend existed. He had yet to become the worldwide “King of Rock and Roll,” star in more than 30 films, or build the image that would eventually become inseparable from his name. On Sept. 9, 1956, he was simply a 21-year-old performer in the middle of an extraordinary rise. America watched that rise happen in real time.
