The Two Hollywood Stars Who Inspired Ian Fleming To Create James Bond

Few fictional characters have achieved the cultural status of James Bond. With his confidence, sharp suits, dangerous missions, and effortless charm, Ian Fleming’s famous spy became an instantly recognizable figure. Even people who have never watched a Bond movie can usually picture exactly what the sophisticated secret agent represents.

According to Far Out, however, Fleming did not create his famous character entirely from imagination. His experiences in British naval intelligence and stories about real spies helped shape the secret agent. At the same time, two Hollywood stars reportedly provided important inspiration: Christopher Lee and Cary Grant. Interestingly, Fleming eventually wanted both men involved in bringing his creation to the screen.

Christopher Lee had an unusual connection to Fleming that went far beyond Hollywood. The two were related, with Lee being Fleming’s step-cousin. More importantly, Lee had wartime experience that gave him qualities Fleming could observe firsthand. His background reportedly included work connected to special operations before he eventually established himself as a successful actor.

That combination of real-world experience and commanding screen presence made Lee an intriguing influence. Fleming reportedly wanted him to play James Bond, although that casting never happened. Nevertheless, Lee eventually entered the franchise in a very different role. He portrayed assassin Francisco Scaramanga opposite Roger Moore in 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun. Rather than playing the hero he may have helped inspire, Lee became one of the franchise’s most memorable villains.

Cary Grant Helped Shape Bond’s Famous Hollywood Charm

While Lee represented some of the character’s real-world toughness, Cary Grant reportedly influenced his sophisticated side. Fleming watched Grant’s films while developing his spy, paying particular attention to thrillers such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious. Grant had mastered the combination of elegance, humor, confidence, and danger that would later become essential to the Bond persona.

Fleming apparently wanted Grant for more than inspiration, too. The Hollywood star reportedly received an offer to play James Bond when the character headed to the big screen. However, Grant believed he was too old for the role and declined the opportunity. Producers eventually turned to Sean Connery, who made his debut as the British secret agent in 1962’s Dr. No. Connery ultimately established the cinematic version audiences came to know and helped launch one of film history’s most enduring franchises. Still, the influences of Lee and Grant offer a fascinating glimpse at the famous faces behind Fleming’s legendary creation.
