‘Seinfeld’ Fans Still Have Reason To Celebrate A Happy Festivus For The Rest Of Us In 2024

Seinfeld began an annual tradition specially reserved for those who do not feel the holiday cheer of Christmas and can hardly pretend with others. Festivus is held two days before Christmas, giving the grumpy ones a chance to mark their day before festivities go into full swing. Like Yuletide, it comes with traditions that include favoring a mere pole over a green lit-up tree, and a special opportunity to air grievances against those who offended you. Festivus is a good excuse to offer criticism, have hard conversations, and give verbal backlash if necessary. You are likely to end the bizarre holiday with a lighter heart and a clean slate ahead of the approaching year.

New York-based clinical psychologist Guy Winch, popularly known as Dear Guy on the Dear Therapists podcast, said it is important to identify the two types of grievances before participating in Festivus. This will help those concerned to know what issues must be resolved and which are best left unaddressed. In cases where the solution is out of control, Guy recommends venting around your Festivus pole; on the flip side, Guy encourages speaking your mind but in an emotionally intelligent way to avoid burning important bridges.

The Seinfeld Festivus episode was from season 8, which aired on December 18, 1997, meaning it turns 27 years old this December 2024. It featured Jason Alexander’s George Constanza talking about his late father and how he coined Festivus to highlight a day free of capitalist demands and religious attachments to the holiday. Jerry Seinfeld became curious after listening to Constanza talk about his late grandfather’s special holiday and made more findings. Jerry was not the only person the Seinfeld episode inspired to celebrate Festivus as more people began to adopt the tradition, even in 2024, when it is still relevant and popular both among fans and those who never watched the show before.

Writer Dan O’Keefe reportedly heard his own real-life father’s dream about Festivus as far back as 1966. His old man was also a writer and editor with a reputation for unconventional ideas. His goal was to condemn the commercialization of Christmas and enable people to embrace individuality as they go about the festive season. The Seinfeld Festivus episode titled “The Strike,” when the social pitfalls of Christmas really came to light, resonated with many Seinfeld fans, who sometimes re-run it during the Christmas holidays, even in 2024. It is easily one of Seinfeld’s most memorable episodes, launching the brilliant tagline “Festivus for the rest of us!”

When is Festivus 2024?

As usual, Festivus 2024 was celebrated this year two days to Christmas, that is on December 23, 2024. In addition to Guy’s tips, another psychotherapist based in Denver—- who is the author of Constructive Wallowing: How to Beat Bad Feelings by Letting Yourself Have Them, clarified that airing grievances is only half of the work done, and it takes validation from a compassionate witness— which could be you or someone else, to give full effect. As Seinfeld fans wonder when is Festivus 2024, they can keep this in mind for their rant to be worth it.

Aside from the talking, when it is Festivus 2024, people can seize the opportunity to attempt pinning down anyone nearby, so it should be no surprise if some wrestling breaks out. Some like to add a twist to Festivus by serving low-key meals such as meatloaf, mashed potatoes or potluck dishes, while maintaining a non-gourmet theme so as not to match with Christmas.

For Festivus 2024, it is not unusual to witness public celebrations as some communities organize activities like Festivus runs, themed trivia nights, and charity outreaches inspired by the holiday’s non-material roots. A corner of social media will also be abuzz, with those participating airing their issues using hashtags and keywords to mark Festivus 2024 online.
