When the film's director, Taylor Hackford, suggested that Foxx’s eyelids be glued during production, he agreed and wore prosthetic eyelids for filming, which lasted 14 hours every day. The movie deals with the whole of Wood’s life and career from childhood to her controversial death at the age of 43. Many people loved Justine's portrayal of Wood. Lucy took on the role of Birkin in the 2010 film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life, which showed the amorous affair between the actress and French singer Serge Gainsbourg. To land the role, she competed with over 500 other young actors. Writer/director Joan Sfar, talking about the fact that Gordon was the perfect fit for Birkin’s role, said, "We auditioned more than five hundred young actors to play Jane Birkin. All English. None of them were right. I had even written to Keira Knightly, who never replied. No one had the natural manner, the joy, and intelligence of Birkin.
