A few weeks ago, we reported that country singer Granger Smith’s son River had tragically passed away. He was only 3 years old. The family did not disclose a cause of death immediately, but now new information has come out. In a video, the family addresses their son’s death with new details and how they’re coping with it.

Granger says on that day, it starts off very normal and happy. He was outside doing gymnastics with his 7-year-old daughter London. His sons River and Lincoln Monarch were having a water gun fight. Granger says he remembers thinking in that very moment, “Soak up this moment because it’s not going to last.”

Granger explains that within just 30 seconds to 3 minutes, he would end up doing CPR on his 3-year-old son. He was drowning. River was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead two days later. We cannot imagine the pain this family must be going through.

He and his wife, Amber, are still trying to find the good in the situation. Granger firmly believes that  “God gave River to us for three years and that was his mission.”

I have to deliver unthinkable news. We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived. Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father. Riv was special. Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts. If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment. Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this. . . In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send donations to Dell Children’s Medical Center in River’s name. The doctors, nurses and staff have been incredible.

“I don’t think God takes anyone too soon. I believe he was put on this earth for that exact amount of time,” Granger explains further. Throughout most of the video, Amber is struggling not to cry and be strong.

In reference to his son, Granger says fighting back tears, “If you could live those days barefoot, red hair flying back on your tractor full speed ahead, if you could do that with your family around you, with no real care in the world — that’s a good way to live.”

“He lived a good 1000 days,” Granger continued. “That’s a huge example for me and how we’re going to look at every single day,” Granger explains. In a time of grief and loss, also comes a time of closeness and leaning on one another for help. Granger touches on just that in the video.

“We are stronger than ever. We’ve gotten so close… We are going to constantly search for the meaning [behind the accident], not the reason, not going to get caught up in the reason because we will never know, but we will find the good.”
