One week ago, we witnessed James Holzhauer lose a game in Jeopardy!. This was not a common occurrence, as he had won 32 episodes in a row! James almost beat the record set by Ken Jennings! He was only short by $58,484. As sad as we are to see James leave the Jeopardy! set, we can’t wait to see what he does next!
The 34-year-old may have won $2,464,216 on Jeopardy!, but he had to give up around half of his winnings to pay taxes. Since all game show winnings are considered ordinary income by the IRS, it is taxed up to 37 percent. But, he still had to pay state taxes.
Find out how much James was actually taxed on his winnings
James had to pay California taxes since that is where the game show was filmed, even though he lives in Nevada. When you combine federal and California state taxes, his winnings are cut down to $1.29 million. That means he handed over 47.6 percent. Hey, I’d still take $1.29 million!
While Ken still holds the record for the most games won and total winnings, James did manage to beat a few records. James currently holds the record for the most money earned in a single Jeopardy! episode. He made $131,127 in one episode! Do you remember watching it in awe?
He also holds the record for the top four money-winning episodes. He truly was a Jeopardy! champ! Last week, he was finally beaten by a Chicago librarian named Emma Boettcher. Unfortunately, someone leaked the video that showed the Final Jeopardy and you could see James lose before the show officially aired.
Many people are worried that the leak will negatively affect the show, as it upset a lot of people that this surprising episode got leaked and spoiled for many fans. How did you feel about the spoiler? Were you sad to see James lose or happy that the show got some fresh new faces?
