Jaws was released in 1975 and directed by Stephen Spielberg, starring Roy Schneider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss. When a ginormous great white shark begins attacking and murdering beach-goers at Amity Island, it prompts police chief Martin Brody (Schneider) to hunt down the shark with the help of marine biologist, Matt Hooper (Dreyfuss) and shark hunter, Quint (Shaw).
The shark is destroyed at the end of the film, however, the success of this film prompted sequels such as Jaws 2 and Jaws 3. None of the sequel films were as successful as the first.
We completely understand why Jaws is still getting all the hype that it is today with events like “Jaws on the Water.” The original film opened with a $7 million weekend and overtook The Grandfather in the time span of 78 days as the highest-grossing film at the North American box office. It became the first film to earn $100 million in U.S. theatrical rentals!
It also has been nominated and won several accolades including 3 Academy Awards, a People’s Choice Award, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award, and many more. It definitely reigns as one of the best movie classics of all time.
