His rep confirmed that Conway died at 8:45 a.m. in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, May 14th, 2019.
Tim was born Thomas Daniel “Tim” Conway on December 15, 1933, in Willoughby, Ohio. He attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio and majored in television and radio. In college, he was a DJ and part of a fraternity. After college graduation, he enlisted in the Army from 1956 to 1958.
When Tim returned home to Ohio, he worked at several Cleveland television stations including KYW-TV and WJW-TV. He began to work on his comedic chops by writing skits and then by appearing on screen. He soon moved to New York City to begin his acting career.
Many know Tim from his first big role as Ensign Charles Parker in the movie and television series McHale’s Navy in the ’60s. By 1970, Tim was offered his own show called The Tim Conway Show. Tim played Spud Barrett while Joe Flynn (also from McHale’s Navy) played Herbert T. Kenworth. It was a sitcom about owner-pilots of one plane.
Tim also had his own variety show called The Tim Conway Comedy Hour around this time. Later, he became a regular on The Carol Burnett Show, becoming a fan favorite. He played several characters on the series and won four Emmy awards for his work. He is also known for 30 Rock, Married With Children, and he has lent his voice to many projects including Scooby Doo and SpongeBob SquarePants.
Tim was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2002. In addition to his four Emmy awards, he received a Golden Globe award, the WGA Award for Best Comedy/Variety, and the TV Land Legend Award. He truly was a comedy legend. We miss him so much!
Tim was married twice during his life. First to Mary Anne Dalton from 1961 to 1978. The pair had six children together. He then married Charlene Fusco in 1984. They lived in Encino, California.
In 2018, he was diagnosed with dementia and had to have brain surgery. He was also confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his days. Unfortunately, his daughter Kelly and his wife Charlene fought over what would be best for his health. Ultimately, Charlene was given sole conservatorship over his health in 2019.
Tim is survived by his six children, one step-daughter, and his wife, Charlene.
