McDonald’s New Drive-Thru Menus Will Change Based On Weather


McDonald’s is making some changes this year. In addition to some new menu items like a spicy chicken sandwich, you will likely see a change in your drive-thru experience soon. McDonald’s recently announced that they are buying a technology company called Dynamic Yield to help them change their drive-thru menus. The deal is said to be around $300 million.

The new menus will be entirely digital and will change based on things like the weather and current restaurant traffic. It may also recommend menu items to you based on what you have already ordered. Think about shopping on Amazon… these McDonald’s drive-thru menus aim to give you a similar experience.

McDonald’s says that they are one of the first places to use this amazing technology. They have been testing a few out and hope to roll out these new drive-thru menus to all of their locations in 2019. McDonald’s has plans to upgrade its restaurants with even more technology this year as well.

They also plan to spend around $1 billion to upgrade all of their U.S. locations. McDonald’s says they will add self-serve kiosks, digital menu boards, and of course, these personalized digital drive-thru menus. They hope that spending all of this money to upgrade their technology will translate into more sales in the upcoming years.

This change should also help drive-thru lines go faster. The digital board will sense how busy the store is and only suggest items that are quicker to make during high traffic times. It should also cut down on errors because the customer can see exactly what they are ordering.

According to CNBC, McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook said, “With this acquisition, we’re expanding both our ability to increase the role technology and data will play in our future and the speed with which we’ll be able to implement our vision of creating more personalized experiences for our customers.”
