We posted a math problem this past weekend on the official Do You Remember? Facebook page, which sparked an uproar of comments and many different answers. The 8th math problem is: 50 + 50 – 25 x 0 + 2 + 2 = ?. After a bit of research from many certified math teachers, we have the correct answer and the process to support it. Here you go, 50+50-25×0+2+2 = 104. Once again the answer for the tricky 8th-grade math problem is 104.
How To Solve The Problem
This most helpful tool for finding the answer of 104 is by using PEMDAS. Ring a bell? You probably learned it in grade school mathematics! PEMDAS is also known as the order of operations, otherwise known as, the order in which you calculate a mathematical problem. The photo below gives you a clear idea of how PEMDAS works to find solutions!
PEMDAS = Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction
There were several answers ranging from 79 to 4. A great try to everyone out there who participated in the tricky mathematical problem (even I couldn’t do it in my head)! Here, we’ll explain the math problem using PEMDAS and explain how we come out with the answer, 104, as provided to us by professionals.
1. You first do what’s in the parentheses (in this situation, there are none)
2. Second, exponents (again, there are none)
3. Third, any multiplication or division (whichever comes first) from left to right (-25 x 0 =0)
4. You now have 50+50-0+2+2
5. Fourth, you do addition and subtraction from left to right, 50+50 = 100
6. Now you have 100-0+2+2
7. This gives you the correct answer of 104
Some mathematical problems can cause much debate. With things like the Pythagorean Theorem and other weird formulas being taught in schools, it’s easy to forget how to do problems like this one! They definitely aren’t easy, so we hope they helped you all with future math problems on our page!
What did you think about this math problem? Should we do more in the future? Be sure to SHARE this article with your thoughts for the next math problem… you could be the first to solve it!

no way , left to right only makes the answer 4
NicC says
exactly
50+50=100 -25=75 x0=0 +2=2 +2=4
steve says
the problem posted says x0 not -0 so 50+50-25×0+2+2 and dont the parenthesis need to be given?
so ans.=4
here it posted 50+50-0+2+2

The brackets are implied by the BODMAS (PEMDAS) priority of multiplication BEFORE adding/subtracting (L2R)

lol. no

4. aint debatable . its arithmetic. not algebra, split calculus, or scientific maths. if its the others. the answer is 0. who the feck were the ‘experts’? haha. and yes. i out qualify any. good luck

Any way I solve this problem, I get zero. One way to look at it is to remove the (x 0) wouldn’t you just divide everything by zero? I feel like I’m in the twilights zone here. Nobody will listen to logic. I guess it MIGHT be possible, I’m not being logical but it just really feels right on this one. I wish I was still in contact with my 11th grade trigonometry teacher. He would settle this!! lol
Adam Clowes says
you are correct. but without separation ‘(,)’ it is TWO positive commands that follow the x0, which yes, would in any other circumstance, result in zero, no matter what. But this is a constant, or, one ‘word’ if you like. Put it this way……… when a car is 4×4….. do you always say its 4×4? 4wd? Awd? or a 16 wheeler? 😉 Maths….
Adam Clowes says
4 is the answer. After zero, its the only working left to be done, which STARTS with +2. 0+2…… lol. pedmas and bodmas are irrelevant here. thats what people dont get. read the question properly. lol. aint no algebra . order of operations? sheesh. nutters
xddddddd says
literally kys

In your explanation you used negative twice: “-25 x 0” and then 100-0+2+2.
Lucky for you -25×0 is 0 and so is 25×0 so 104 is still the correct answer.
PEMDAS means that you should have simply used 25×0.
Adam Clowes says
pedmas pemdas bodmas etc etc etc……….. no relevance . this is arithmetic . i spent 50 quid, made 50 quid, gave 20 away, made a bet in the bookies and left even, made 0, lost 0.., then found 2 quid on the road and bought a 2 quid scratch card which i doubled my money on. hahah. YOU GONNA USE PEMDAS FOR THAT? no…. you do it in sequence. welcome to MATHS.

I’m on my 50s, During my elementary days (way back) we compute math peoblems according to order from left to right. Who the hell initiated this pemdas/mdas what so ever… Confusing!!!!!

Delaila, I too am in my fifties and went to school at the same time as you. PEMDAS has been around much longer than we’ve even walked this planet. As a matter of fact, PEMDAS or ‘order of operations’ was first used in text back in 1646, In Van Schooten’s 1646 edition of Vieta, B in D quad. My friend is sitting here giggling because he remembers learning PEMDAS back in the 50’s in elementary school. It’s been around a very long time. We use it because otherwise we’d all come up with different answer without it.

So many mathematically illiterate people.
We called it BEDMAS, but it’s the same thing as PEMDAS.
All you people saying 4 or 0, try asking a math teacher. Don’t be too embarrassed when you find out you’re wrong.
Some people take it too far though, and think that PEMDAS means you do multiplication before division regardless of order (wrong) and adding before subtracting for the same reason (still wrong). M and D are combined, and so are A and S.
Might be easier if you just eliminate the terms subtraction and division, as neither truly exists. Subtracting is just adding a negative (ex. 10 – 4 = 6 is the same as 10 + (-4) = 6), while division is just multiplying an inverse (ex 10 ÷ 2 = 5 is the same as 10 x (½) = 5).
You’re welcome.

You missed out the (answer to first sum – 50+50-25=75) THEN you missed out 75X0= 0 any number multiplied by ZERO gives ZERO ! After that, you have 2+2 making FOUR !!!!!
