76-year-old Carole King surprised many people by making a guest appearance during the 5th-anniversary showing of her Broadway show Beautiful. King appeared, obviously as herself, to sing her song and the title of the show, “Beautiful,” which was the final song of the show. We bet that no one was expecting this!
Beautiful is a Broadway show about King’s life and musical career. As detailed by the video included from King’s Broadway performance, the crowd was going absolutely nuts as they did not expect a performance from the one and only Carole King. She was dressed as her younger self and was standing next to the actress who actually played King’s younger self, during the finale.
During the finale/curtain call, as stated previously, King was standing right next to the actress who currently plays a younger version of King, named Chilina Kennedy. King joined the cast in singing the encore for the show, a very famous King song titled “I Feel The Earth Move”. King also made some time to comment on the experience of performing in her own Broadway show.
“What a night!” King says, “It was amazing to be a part of this. This musical has been such a magical experience. To be here and celebrate our fifth anniversary with so much joy and love is amazing.”
The Broadway show Beautiful opened on Broadway on January 13th, 2014. According to Deadline, it has won a number of Tony, Olivier, and Grammy Awards, and it has grossed nearly $250 million with nearly 2.2 million ticket buyers. It is the only show from the 2013-14 period to still be running on Broadway and is the highest-grossing production in the history of Sondheim theatre. Wow!
The show features some incredibly classic King tunes like “You’ve Got a Friend,” “One Fine Day,” “Up on the Roof,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “Natural Woman.”
Carole King talks about how important this show is for her…
“It’s kind of miraculous that this show has lasted for five years because not many do. And it’s a testament to, I think, people say the music … but the book is so good and the direction and the lighting and the sets. It’s really a well put together production,” King says in an interview after the show.
Get your tickets for Beautiful now! It’s clearly a show you don’t want to miss… just in case Carole King shows up again!
