Quarters Worth $30,000 Are Still Undiscovered In People’s Homes

If you know a thing or two about coins and other collectibles, then you know that they can fetch a pretty penny. People are willing to pay high sums to get their hands on rare coins and currency from around the world. There are even people who will pay a lot of money to get dollar bills with specific serial numbers on them. But recently, one rare quarter was listed for sale on eBay at $35,000.00. And already 1,400 people are watching the online listing as of the first week of June. And dozens have inquired about purchasing it.

While that’s great for that person, you could be sitting on a gold mine. It is time to check your coins and see if you have a quarter worth tens of thousands of dollars. Here’s what you need to look for.

The quarter is worth so much because it has what those in the coin collectible industry called a rare “proof error.” The man selling the coin, Mike Byers, is a self-proclaimed expert and leading authority on proof errors.

According to the item description on eBay, Byers writes:

“Proof coins are struck by technicians who had feed the blanks into special presses. They are produced, examined and packaged using extreme quality control. It is very unusual to find major proof errors.”

Byers goes on to explain why this quarter is worth tens of thousands of dollars.

“This unique 1970-S Proof Quarter from the United States was over struck on a 1941 Quarter from Canada. This mint error was originally discovered in [a] group of San Francisco Proof Errors that was auctioned by the State of California. … This is one of the most fascinating and intriguing proof mint errors ever discovered.”

Coin collectors usually have opposite interests. Either they collect old and rare coins that are in perfect condition or collectors look for error coins that were made by mistake or with the wrong material. This quarter obviously falls in the second category as it was a proof error.

If you turn the quarter about 90 degrees, you’ll also notice the outline of the bust of King George VI beneath our quarter’s George Washington. (The Penny Hoarder)

The quarter for sale here has a faint “1941” still visible above the word “dollar” on the back of the coin. If you look closely, you can see the older numbers on the coin.

Unfortunately, Woman’s World magazine said that it is not hopeful for you to find one of these error coins in your house, writing it’s “unlikely that one of these high-value quarters will be in your junk drawer.”

But although the women’s magazine suggests against looking, as soon as I get home from the office, I’m pouring out my jar of coins on the desk and looking through them to see if I have one with a proof error. I wouldn’t mind becoming $30,000 richer because of a coin. It is a dream come true for anyone who wants to win big fast. It’s like winning the lottery.

Are you a coin collector? Do you know a thing or two about what to look for when it comes to rare coins and currencies of the world?
