Scooby Doo’s Best Celebrity Guest Appearances

Do you remember The New Scooby-Doo Movies? It was an animated American mystery comedy television series that was produced for CBS by Hanna-Barbera that ran for two successful seasons between 1972 and 1974. It is the second animated television series in the studio’s Scooby-Doo franchise, and it follows its first incarnation, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

Besides each episode being an hour long, The New Scooby-Doo Movies differed from its original form with an additional rotation of real world celebrity cameos in each episode. The celebrities would help The Mystery Inc. team succeed in solving each particular mystery of the episode. Here are some of our favorite celebrities to appear on this famous Scooby-Doo sub-branch.

    • The Three Stooges in “The Ghastly Ghost Town”
      In this episode, when the gang is side-tracked by a giant bat, they help the famous Three Stooges with their amusement park- which is a real life ghost town with ghostly villains lurking about.
    • Sonny and Cher in “The Secret of Shark Island”
      In this episode, the gang stays at an elegant offshore hotel with Sonny & Cher. Suddenly, the hotel manager, a grim looking Mr. Meekly warns them all about the urban legend of Pescado Diabolico and his Shark Men…
    • Mama Cass Elliot in “The Haunted Candy Factory”
      The gang receives an S.O.S. from the famous Mamas and The Papas singer Cass Elliot, and they end up helping her to unmask the Green Globs who are running around all over the place inside her candy factory
    • Dick Van Dyke in “The Haunted Carnival”
      In this particular episode, Mystery Inc. arrives at a carnival that happens to be run by Dick Van Dyke and they help him when a ghostly strongman begins to haunt the carnival grounds.

    • Jerry Reed in “The Phantom of the Country Music Hall”
      The gang attends a concert by Jerry Reed but they discover he is missing. They are told by Ben Bing and Bertha to leave the place because everything is fine… But is it?
    • Josie and the Pussycats in “The Haunted Showboat”
      On their way to the Tom Sawyer festival, the gang gets lost in a thunder storm and they end up getting stuck on a dock near an old haunted showboat named, the Dixie Queen. While attempting to find a way out, they bump into Josie and the Pussycats.
    • Don Adams in “The Exterminator”
      The gang helps Don Adams when he is hired to exterminate the bugs in the home of famous horror movie actor Lorne Chumley. There are monsters lurking in every corner, though, creating obstacles for Don and the Mystery Inc. gang.
    • Davy Jones in “The Famous Horseman of Hagglethorn Hall”
      Davy Jones is featured in this episode as the heir to Hagglethorn Hall, which is a haunted fortress that was transferred over from Scotland…but a ghostly phantom knight doesn’t want him to take it over, so the gang helps him solve the mysterious rivalry. Davy Jones even gets his own singing part in the episode, as seen in the video below!
    • Laurel and Hardy in “The Ghost of Bigfoot”
      The ghost of Bigfoot has been tormenting all of the guests at a popular ski resort, scaring them away. Mystery Inc. and Laurel and Hardy team up to solve the mystery together.
    • Phyllis Diller in “A Good Medium Is Rare
      After returning the dog of Phyllis Diller, the gang checks out a gargoyle and some masked men who are after her treasure, leading the gang and her to a magical mansion- in order to try and trick Phyllis Diller into spilling the location of her hidden treasure.
