On July 13, Shanne Doherty died. She was 53 years old when she passed away after a years-long struggle with cancer. “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” said her publicist, Leslie Sloane, in a statement. “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Doherty is remembered for her iconic performances in Beverly Hills, 90210, Little House on the Prairie, Heathers, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and Charmed, among others. For her performance in Our House, Doherty received two Young Artist Award nominations.
Her departure from Charmed became the stuff of heated debate in the immediate aftermath of her final season, season two, with the biggest theory alleging that co-star Alyssa Milano got her fired.
Months before she died, Doherty had been making end-of-life plans, selling or donating her worldly possessions to make her passing just a bit easier on her mother. “My priority at the moment is my mom,” she explained. “I know it’s going to be hard on her if I pass away before her. Because it’s going to be so hard on her, I want other things to be a lot easier. I don’t want her to have a bunch of stuff to deal with. I don’t want her to have four storage units filled with furniture.”
Rest in peace, Shannen Doherty.
