Former president Jimmy Carter will be receiving hospice care. News of this comes from a Saturday statement made by the The Carter Center. Carter turned 98 last October and us the longest-living former U.S. president.
“After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention,” the statement reads. “He has the full support of his family and his medical team.”
Jimmy Carter became the 39th U.S. president after he beat President Gerald R. Ford ’76. Carter has had a series of health scares and injuries over the years that preceed his new care regimen. For example, he faced and beat a cancer diagnosis in 2015, then in 2019 he had a serious fall.
Carter is a metastatic melanoma survivor and after his series of falls he had to undergo hip surgery. He a d his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, founded the The Carter Center 40 years ago to promote peace. The Center also shared that Carter had been reading congratulatory messages celebrating his birthday.
