The Masked Singer recently unveiled someone absolutely legendary behind the Gnome, and it was none other than Dick Van Dyke. The show returned for its 9th season on Fox and its first elimination was touted as “the most legendary, decorated and beloved unmasking in history.”
It was only after that the Gnome sang their own rendition of Billie Holiday’s “When You’re Smiling,” that he was eliminated. Taking off the mask then showcased Dick Van Dyke to the audience in a shocking reveal, perhaps one of the most shocking in Masked Singer history.
Just ahead of the reveal, Dick Van Dyke spoke with Entertainment Weekly on The Masked Singer, calling it the “weirdest thing he’s ever done,” and how he fought to sing “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” at the end of the show. He also reacted to people in the crowd crying over him and his reveal. “Well, when they asked me to do it, I had never seen it. So I looked at it on the air and it looked like fun. And I was so positive that nobody would ever guess it was me, that they would have somebody 97 years old on there,” he said.
Panelist Nicole Scherzinger was one of the people in the crowd sobbing at the reveal. When asked if he gets that reaction a lot, Dick replied, “I have had that happen, yes. You know what is fun now? We’re on our third generation and I would get little kids who will see me and say, “It’s [his Mary Poppins character] Bert!” And I love that, that kids are just discovering those movies now. And it’s great to be on a third generation.”
