Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea have been married for over three decades. During that time, he built an extremely successful career and they raised four children: Stephanie, Jesse, Jacob, and Romeo. Through the ups and downs, they have remained solid, which begs the question, how do they stay so happy?
Jon and Dorothea met while they were in high school attending Sayreville War Memorial High School in New Jersey. Jon once joked, “She let me cheat off her in history. I was immediately drawn to her from the minute I saw her and that never changed.”
While they began dating in high school, they didn’t get married right away. They split up briefly in 1985 and Jon dated actress Diane Lane during that time. However, they ended up getting back together and wed in 1989 in Las Vegas.
Jon explained, “We had the No. 1 album, the No. 1 single, and we were playing three nights at the Forum in L.A. I turned to Dorothea and said, ‘I got an idea. Why don’t we go right now?’ She said, ‘You’re out of your mind.’ I said, ‘Come on. What’s better than this, right now, this moment?’ And so we ran off to Las Vegas. Didn’t tell a soul.” Jon’s band Bon Jovi continued to grow in success and so did their family. He said about his four children, “You think you’re in love when you’re a kid and you meet your wife and get married, but you know you’re in love after you have a child.”
Jon credits his long marriage to the fact that they love hanging out and said that his wife is very compassionate and supportive. He shared, “I’m not a saint, and I have not been a saint. I missed tons of birthdays and school plays. … [Dorothea has] been in it the whole game. She understands what it means. It’s my life, and it is what it is.”
