Recently, a Twitter user going by Marina Oswald has shared some interesting photos featuring a Kennedy Halloween shindig celebrated back in 1962 at the White House. However, the star of the show might be Jackie O and whatever convoluted costume she decided to wear that particular year.
“halloween at the kennedy white house, 1962. jackie is wearing the black costume. I have no idea what she’s going as,” the user captioned the photos.
Many of the comments added to the tweet thread were of jokes. “That’s not a costume; they put that on her so she doesn’t eat all the sheet metal in the White House,” one person joked. Another person commented with a realistic possibility: “Wash Post featured pic in 2012, with commentary from historian Carl Anthony, who confirmed that the costume was, in fact, a garment bag. “That is really her sense of the ridiculous,” said Anthony. “[She] would be the last person in the world to wear a garment bag on her head.””
There were actually tons of tweets joking about Jackie O “eating metal” and someone came to the thread to ask for confirmation on that. However, that led this person to find another possibility—Walt Disney’s character The Phantom Blot. “Came looking through the responses for an actual explanation but it’s all joke comments. Yours looks plausible. Is this only a guess? Or are you confident this is what inspired the costume?” the person asks.
Unfortunately, we may never know what Jackie O’s Halloween costume really was that year. We’d love to hear from you if you have any guesses. Drop a comment below if you think you know what she’s wearing!
