Bringing Back The Kmart Store Jingle Of 1973

The YouTube page “Attention KMart shoppers” gave us a nostalgic moment when they uploaded the Kmart jingle from 1973 on their channel. “In my opinion, the opening Kmart jingle is the most important artifact of this recording,” the uploader wrote in the comment section, “but the music and small number of commercials make it a great listen.”

The clip had over 42,000 views and more than a thousand likes, despite the video being taken down at almost a quarter of a million views when it was initially posted. Comments from excited people rolled in, with people expressing how much the jingle reminded them of childhood.

A Throwback To The Soft Jam

“The Kmart opening jingle is so energetic! It makes me happy! I wish TV commercials would bring back this style of music!” one happy person wrote in the comment section. “The wonderful nostalgia of my childhood took place in bits at Kmart. Soft pretzels and cherry icee,” gushed another, reminiscing on their childhood.

Someone else shared her experience with the store and how she had patronized them in the past, “I still have an American Tourister soft-side suitcase I bought at Kmart nearly 20 years ago. I traveled the world with it. I’ll never forget the day I bought it as it was the last time I ever shopped there. Sad but sweet memories.”

Also, many people expressed their hurt at how Kmart declined over the years. “It’s even more depressing that my nearest local Kmart is shut down, and the building is scheduled to be demolished real soon.”

The American retail company Kmart was one of the big players in the big box department store niche. With their first store opening in 1962 in Michigan, the business peaked at 2,486 stores globally, including 2,323 discount stores and Super Kmart Centers in the United States.

Down the line, Kmart became a subsidiary of Sears Holding Corporation for fourteen years until 2019, when Transform SR Brands LLC took over. The Kmart brand started to experience a terrible decline in 2010, which led Sears Holdings to announce the closure of some Sears and Kmart stores.

Sears Holdings had a lot of financial distress, debt, and legal battles and ultimately declared bankruptcy. Even the change in Kmart management did not seem to salvage any losses, as more stores have been closed down, and a final demise seems to loom in 2022.
