James Caan, known for his roles in films like The Godfather and Misery, died earlier this month after his family posted the tragic news to his personal Twitter account. Now, a cause of death has been released. According to Fox News, Caan died from a heart attack and coronary artery disease. He was 82.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the family originally wrote in a statement. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
His manager, Matt Del Piano, also released a statement following the death of Caan. He said, “Jimmy was one of the greatest. Not only was he one of the best actors our business has ever seen, he was funny, loyal, caring and beloved. Our relationship was always friendship before business.”
“I will miss him dearly and am proud to have worked with him all these years. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time.”
Some of Caan’s early work included Red Line 7000, El Dorado, and The Rain People. However, fans may remember him most for his portrayal of Brian Piccolo in the 1971 television movie Brian’s Song, his role as Sonny Corleone in Coppola’s The Godfather, his role as author Paul Sheldon in the ’90s horror flick Misery, and of course, the grouchy Walter Hobbs (who’s on Santa’s naughty list) in the famed Christmas movie Elf.
