It was recently revealed that the longtime show Maury is ending. After 31 seasons, host Maury Povich decided it was time to retire. He announced the news this week and said that he still has some conflicting feelings about the show’s end.
Maury revealed, “Everybody says, ‘How does it feel?’ It just feels that the season is ending. Come August or September, there’s no red [camera] light, no audience, and there’s no staff and crew … I don’t know how I’m going to feel. I think I’m going to feel maybe empty. Maybe I’ll feel lost. All l know is we’ve had such a good run, I thought now was the time to end it.”
Maury also noted that he actually wanted to retire six years ago but NBC Universal convinced him to keep hosting the show. He agreed to honor one more contract because he said he wanted to be loyal to the over 100 staff and crew members who have worked on the show for years.
Tracie Wilson, executive vice president, of NBC Universal Syndication Studios, also opened up about the decision to end the show. She shared, “Maury and I decided two years ago that this season would be the farewell season for the show, and while his retirement is bittersweet, we are so happy for him to be able to spend more time on the golf course.”
Congrats to Maury on his retirement! He has been working in show business since the ’60s. Prior to becoming a talk show host, he was a television journalist.
