Have you ever noticed that Heinz bottles all say “57 varieties” on them? Now, there are hundreds of varieties of the beloved condiments, so why do the bottles still have that number on them? H.J. Heinz created the brand way back in 1896 and the number 57 actually had nothing to do with how many varieties there were.
Heinz Brand Director Ashleigh Gibson shared a story about the history of the number and the brand. She said, “At the time, there were 60 products being sold, but he thought there was something mystical, magical, and memorable about 57. He said he chose ‘5’ because it was his lucky number, and ‘7’ because it was his wife’s lucky number. It has been ’57’ ever since.”
Heinz reportedly got the idea while visiting New York City and saw an ad for “21 styles of shoes.” He thought that it captured people’s attention and made them want to visit the store. He had also heard that the number 7 was more appealing to people.
Ashleigh added, “Our ’57’ mark is part of our proud heritage. Originally, it appeared locked up with a pickle graphic, but it has evolved over time to more effectively reflect our product portfolio and become a brand asset in its own right — much like the Heinz logo, keystone and our iconic glass bottle.”
