Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings are iconic country music stars and were great friends before Waylon passed away. However, they reportedly disagreed on almost everything! So, how did they actually become friends when they disagreed on so much? Willie speaks more on this in his memoir.
Willie said that he met Waylon at an all-night restaurant in Pheonix, Arizona. They were both just beginning their music careers and were considered “outlaws” in the country music world. Waylon reportedly asked Willie if he should go to Nashville to work on his career and Willie told him not to! “I thought he had a better gig than I did,” Will admitted. “Fortunately, he didn’t listen to me.”
Willie said they became fast friends and stayed friends even though they “disagreed on almost everything and argued like old married people.” Eventually, Willie and Waylon joined Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson to form The Highwaymen. Willie said in his memoir that the tours were “the most fun [he] ever had before or since.”
“Kris and Waylon would argue about politics; John and I would laugh a lot,” he wrote. “Later on they would call me just to hear a good joke.” Waylon died in 2002 and Johnny died in 2003.
