It’s pretty well known that the Beatles absolutely loved Elvis Presley and his music, but there was certainly one song of his that they just hated. So, Kiss Me Quick was an album that was cut from Pot Luck with Elvis, released a year before. It went on to become a single in the UK by the end of 1963, and the Beatles can’t stand it.
“The only thing I don’t like about Elvis is the songs,” says Paul McCartney. “You know, I love his voice. I used to love all the records like ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ and ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ — lovely. But I don’t like the songs now. And ‘Kiss Me Quick,’ it sounds like Blackpool on a sunny day.”
As for George Harrison, he was even more brutal with his review of “Kiss Me Quick” as a single. “It’s an old track. And I think, seeing as they’re releasing old stuff, if they release something like ‘My Baby Left Me,’ it’d be number one because Elvis is definitely still popular. It’s just the song’s a load of rubbish. I mean, Elvis is great. He’s fine. But it’s not for me.”
Prior to “Kiss Me Quick” being released, Elvis had another song, “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise” released… which John Lennon showed his dislike for. He compared the song and Elvis, in general, to Bing Crosby. At the same time, the Beatles had just released “She Love You,” earning the spot of No. 1 in the country at the time, and would continue to end up on top by the end of ’63 with their hit “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
