Mick Jagger And Dave Grohl Compose A Surprise Anthem For The Post-COVID World

The coronavirus pandemic ushered in times of worry, loss, and separation. In part as a way to cope, a new branch of COVID culture sprang up, complete with its own brand of posts featuring humor and solidarity alike. The pandemic truly had – and has – an emotional aura about it, and so Mick Jagger and Dave Grohl released an anthem for a world post-COVID-19.

The song is “Eazy Sleazy.” It went live on Mick Jagger’s YouTube page as of April 13. Since then, it’s accumulated over 1.9 million views as of April 21. For viewers, it represented a summary of what everyone’s endured and looks forward to shedding coming out of lockdown. But it also represents a meeting of the minds, and heroes and fans working together on a big project.

It was “eazy sleazy” to write a post-COVID anthem

“I wanted to share this song that I wrote about coming out of lockdown, with some much needed optimism,” wrote Jagger on a Twitter post from April 13, the same day he and Grohl dropped their new anthem for the post-COVID lockdown world.

His post continued, “Thank you to Dave Grohl for jumping on drums, bass and guitar, it was a lot of fun working with you on this-hope you all enjoy Eazy Sleazy!” The post also received a retweet from Foo Fighters, the band which Grohl founded after his Nirvana days. But the post didn’t just further share word of the new song; it expressed immense gratitude.

Fans and idols

The collaboration tried to outline all the traits that came to define the pandemic, then include a strong note of hope. Lines such as “Cancel all the tours, football’s fake applause” highlight the lack of activity through concerts and sports events, when any big games that did occur pumped in fake sounds from a nonexistent audience. However, the song also purports the post-COVID world as a time when “Soon it’ll be a memory you’re trying to remember to forget.” Then, listeners do actually get past this pandemic with “We escaped from the prison walls,” after the song had repeatedly referenced being stuck behind prison walls

For Dave Grohl, though, the opportunity to create this song overall was a triumph and cause for celebration. “It’s hard to put into words what recording this song with Sir @MickJagger means to me,” the reply wrote, composed specifically by Grohl. “It’s beyond a dream come true. Just when I thought life couldn’t get any crazier……and it’s the song of the summer, without a doubt!!”  As one YouTube comment on the new song’s video succinctly notes, “Dave Grohl, the only human who has played music with all the rock heroes of his childhood.” Congratulations to them both, and take a listen to the song below.
