- It was just the anniversary of Celine’s late husband’s death a few days prior.
Singer and superstar Celine Dion has sadly experienced another difficult loss in her life. Her mother, Thérèse Tanguay Dion, has sadly passed away at the age of 92. She reportedly died on the morning of January 16th following months of rapid health decline. Celine’s father, Adhémar Dion, died back in 2003 at the age of 80.
Celine confirmed this sad news herself on Instagram. She is on tour at the moment and reassured her fans that the tour would continue. Celine even went on stage the night her mom died and dedicated that show to her. “Maman, we love you so much… We dedicate tonight’s show to you and I’ll sing to you with all my heart. Love, Céline xx,” she captions a throwback family photo on Instagram.
Remembering Thérèse Tanguay Dion
The passing of Celine’s mom fell on the fourth anniversary of the death of her brother, Daniel. It was also just days after the anniversary of her late husband’s death, René Angélil. Back in 2016, Celine opened up about losing both her husband and brother within the same week. She has dealt with such a devastating loss.
“René escorted my brother; it was perfect,” she recalls. “He took him under his wings and he said ‘You know, I’ll take good care of him.’” At the time of both their deaths, it was also extremely hard on Celine’s mom. That’s when she offered her mother some words of encouragement and wisdom. “I said, ‘You know what Mom? You gave birth and you took him back. You took his hand from the beginning to the end,’” she says to her mom.
Dealing with so much loss and finding strength again
Celine also goes on to describe her mother as a “very, very strong person.” She says that the number of kids her mom had should explain that in itself, as she was the mother to 14 children. “Just to give you an example, my dad didn’t want to have kids!” Celine jokes.
Back in April 2019, Celine spoke with PEOPLE about overcoming so much loss in her life and finding new strength within herself. “Suddenly I’m making all of the decisions,” she says. “All of my life I’ve had so much protection. I’m the 14th child of a family. I had a big army. … I never had time to think about what I wanted to do with my life. It just happened.” Rest in peace, Thérèse Tanguay Dion.
