- Rocky Johnson, WWE champion and the father of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, has sadly died.
- There is no known cause of death.
- He got his start in wrestling in the 1960s and went on to join the WWE in the ’80s.
We are sad to report that Rocky Johnson, WWE superstar and father of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, has died. He was 75 years old. Known as Rocky “Soulman” Johnson, he started in the National Wrestling Alliance in the 1960s and soon joined the WWE in the ’80s. Johnson and Tony Atlas would become the league’s first African-American tag team champions. They were known as the Soul Patrol.
Some of Johnson’s biggest rivals in the WWE include Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, Don Muraco and Adrian Adonis. He would soon retire in 1991 and would later be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008. Of course, his son who we all know as ‘The Rock,’ has followed in his father’s footsteps. He continued on the family legacy during his time with professional wrestling.
Remembering Rocky Johnson
WWE posted a statement on its website following the sad news. “WWE is saddened to learn that Rocky “Soul Man” Johnson (born Wayde Douglas Bowles), a WWE Hall of Famer, former World Tag Team Champion, and father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has passed away at age 75,” they write.
Rocky was born in Nova Scotia, Canada as Wayde Douglas Bowles and got his start in wrestling at the age of 16. Back in June 2018, Dwayne paid tribute to his father for making him the man he is today and helping him to be a great dad to his own daughters.
