Actor Harry Hamlin said that he auditioned for the role of Indiana Jones, but his audition was a strange one. In 1978, Harry said he met Steven Spielberg and was set to audition with Stephanie Zimbalist. Stephanie was auditing for the role of Marion Ravenwood (ultimately the role went to Karen Allen).

Steven told the actors that executive producer George Lucas was going to be late. He asked the actors to make George a chocolate cake while they waited. Harry did not realize at the time that Steven could have been watching them and seeing if they had any chemistry. What a sneaky test!

Unfortunately for Harry, he seemingly failed the test. He started telling Stephanie stories about Steven that he heard from his friend Amy Irving (Amy later married Steven Spielberg from 1985-1989).

According to Yahoo, Harry said, “I was talking about how Amy was calling her friend group in LA and saying that this guy, this director guy was stalking her in New York and how she was kind of getting annoyed because this guy, Steven Spielberg, was showing up at the stage door every night with flowers. It never occurred to me … that we were actually in the audition while we were making the cake.”

Of course, Harrison Ford went on to play Indiana Jones. Harry has never worked with Steven to this day. He admits, “I didn’t get the part, OK, and I’ve never worked with Steven Spielberg, and I grant you that I never will work with Steven Spielberg and I never learned how to make a cake.”
