A cake artist by the name of Leslie Vigil creates absolutely beautiful cakes that look like they’re actually embroidered. She has actually been doing this craft for years now! She has nearly 150,000 Instagram followers that are dedicated to following all her new designs. Her newest creation of ‘tapestry cakes’ are really taking off.
The 34-year-old began her journey of cake artistry after going to a cake decorating class with her mom as a kid. She would soon go on to attend the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu. She specialized in baking and pastries while there. Despite such impressive schooling, finding a job afterward was extremely difficult. So, she took matters into her own hands and really made things take off for herself!

“I took what I learned from school and built upon my knowledge by watching, reading, experimenting, and learning in every way I could,” Leslie explains to Better Homes and Gardens. She would eventually land at Tasteful Cakes in Corona, CA where she could really showcase her skills.
Her new style of cakes, as mentioned before, goes by the name of ‘tapestry cakes.’ She makes these designs by use of piping that resembles embroidery stitching. Among the designs of the tapestry cakes are flowers, symmetrical patterns, and other floral touches.
Leslie says that a lot of her cake designs contain Mexican and Russian influence. “I love the idea of harmonizing textile traditions from different cultures,” she says in one of her photo captions on Instagram.
The embroidery stitching first came about when she began playing with the concept of it for her niece’s first birthday. She creates stitching designs around the “1” candle and along the border of the cake. Thus, tapestry cakes are born! And they’ve only gotten more and more beautiful since then.
“I’m really loving what fabric artists are doing now with their crochet, weaving, and macrame,” Leslie says to BuzzFeed. “I’d love the opportunity to explore some techniques to recreate those gorgeous textures.”
