At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, two storylines that later inspired films make remarkable reappearances. As a companion to the events, we at DoYouRemember thought we’d bring you up to date.

Ice Hockey: Unites States verses Russia: February 15th

In the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, in what became known as the “Miracle on Ice” and later inspired the Disney film Miracle, the United States hockey team—made up solely of collegiate athletes and amateurs—defeated the Soviet national team in one of the biggest upsets of all time. Thirty-four years later, in a match hosted by the losing country, Russian fans are looking for the gold that the United States snatched all those years ago.

Miracle on Ice

Figures to keep in mind: The United States has yet to win gold in hockey since Russia won gold in the two consecutive Olympics after their loss in 1980. Both the United States and Russia have very talented squads this year.

What might ruin everything: Canada. They have by far the best squad, and if they prove to be the overwhelming powerhouse that they’re projected to be, the United States/Russia rivalry might be completely overshadowed.

Likelihood of a film sequel: Meh.

Bobsled: Jamaica verses the World: February 16th

For the 12 people who have not seen or heard of the film Cool Runnings, the Jamaican bobsled team became international heroes when they competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Canada. The tropical nation that has yet to experience snow in any form was heavily outmatched in their debut, and was lent most of their supplies from competing nations. In their only heat, the Jamaican team crashed, but since 1988 they’ve improved. In 1994, they finished 14th place. Now, 26 years after their debut, the inspirational team is back and more competitive than ever.

Figures to keep in mind:
The team qualified for the first time since the 2002 Olympics. They have yet to win any medals. They lacked money to compete in Sochi, but the Dogecoin community began a fundraiser that eventually raised more than $100,000. Also, there’s an extremely small chance that Usain Bolt shocks everyone and joins the team.

What might ruin everything: The airport. When the Jamaican team arrived in Sochi, their belongings had been searched, tampered with, and delayed a full day.

Likelihood of a film sequel: If the team wins gold for the first time, then pretty likely. Cool Runnings 2: Running Even Cooler. You saw it here first.
